New Book

My new introductory philosophy book, Twenty Problems in Philosophy, has just been published by McGraw-Hill. I wrote three of the chapters on dualism, artificial intelligence, and consciousness. The other authors are Thomas Ming, Wong Ching Wa, Danny Leung, and Y.Y. Yung.

Unfortunately there are some typos and I shall be listing them here.

  1. hey, joe! congrats on your book. would love to read it and be introduced to “real” (?) philosophy, as opposed to critical theory, which is about as close to philosophy (the continental variant) as i ever get. love the new look of your site (perhaps not so “new” but i haven’t visited in a while). i’m sloggin away here with too many writing deadlines and teaching prep. i miss eating with you and lucina!! when are you coming to vancouver?!

  2. This is a rather basic textbook. There is nothing on ideological critique or deconstruction, so I am not sure if this is “real” philosophy for you!

  3. Ha ha. You will have to ask the students at HKU SPACE and City University. I think they are using this book in their intro to philosophy course. 😉

Hey Cool! Will you also add a new section on AI and logic programming on Critical Thinking Web?

Hm … interesting idea, but I guess not.
They are less directly relevant to the
main purpose of the web site.

I do hope to offer a course on computability
and recursion theory one day though.
